Last week I was in Marshall for the Young Artist Conference and what joy to be back teaching young Picassos.  Great kids in all three sessions that I taught.   I was really joyful pig in mud.  Kinda like Ben in my stories.   This week I team up with Doug Zuehlsdorff for a show entitled H2Z.  Above is a fine sample of his scratchboard art.  A very talent pen & ink artist as well as his paintings.  We are trying a different night to open...tonight in fact.  Come join us 5-7pm at Ravenrock Gallery.  Oh ya, I'm featuring a few original drawings from the three books...AND they will be for sale!

I'm excited to say, I'll be heading back into the classroom on Wednesday at Southwest Minnesota State University.  No..not college students..better!  It's a wonderful program put on by the Southwest Educational Cooperative and includes students from third through eighth graders from a host of schools.  About 1200 in all and I get to work with about 80 of them in three separate periods.   Here's a sample of the project I'll be presenting called: Fabulous Funny Funky Faces.  Ya, I know it's a lot of alliteration, but I think they'll like it.  I've still have a bit of work to do on this one so I better get busy.

Here's a couple notes from the past weeks:  I had a super weekend at the Celebrate Art/ Celebrate Coffee Art Festival in Willmar.  In fact, there judges chose my art work as Best 2D!  Do I hear a Yahoo?...Wow..I was very honored.  Next, my son Pete and I hosted our "Horizons" show at the Wild Hare Bistro and had a very nice turn out.  That show is up all of October and we are both super proud of the work that's in it.   Well, today Ol' Donnie Boy heads to Moorhead to an author's signing for Homecoming.   What a special honor that is for me.  I actually get to sit down next to one of my former Professors...ya moi!   Dr. Hiram Drache...no less.  It should be fun.

Heading into this Fall of 2014, I'm very excited about all the shows that are coming up.  Above is two examples of work (top piece is Pete's acrylic the lower one mine) which will be part of a show starting in October with my son Peter Houseman.
We've talked about this before and finally got it done.   The show is entitled "Horizons" and will open Oct. 3rd at the Wild Hare Bistro in Bemidji, Mn.  Please join us for our reception from 3:30-5:30 that Friday.  You won't want to miss this one.
This weekend - tomorrow Friday....I'll be at The Three Sisters Furnishings Store from 2-4pm for an Author's Signing.  A great store with unique offerings...located  near New London, Mn. just North of Willmar.   On Saturday Sept. 2oth I'm in Willmar for their Celebrate Art/Celebrate Coffee Festival.  Another great venue to catch.
Hope to see you there!  Don

Again...it's been awhile.   Here's what I'm up to next.   On this Friday - Sept. 5th  the
Artists of Studio 10's show is at Ravenrock Gallery in Bemidji.  Our show is entitled:
It's All Abstract to Me.  Our reception is from 5-7pm.  Come join us.
Here are my two works, which I'm quite pleased with as I ventured into the pure elements of art.  They have Latin titles.  The top piece is entitled:  Prima Facie  and the lower one is
Seraphic Saltator.
Come Friday, I'll tell their meanings.   Or maybe you Latin speakers can figure it out.  Come anyway.

Let's see...it's been a busy two weekends....and today is not any different.   I head up to Northome, Mn. for the Koochaching Co. Fair.   It looks like another wonderful summer Minnesota spell of August warm days and I hope some of you might join me.   The fair grounds are located just North of Northome on Hwy. 71.   Here's a painting called "Now Silent" that sold at the Woodcarver's in Blackduck to very nice couple from Bemidji.   "See ya at the Fair"...I hope.    I'll be there Friday, Saturday and Sunday...Aug.8th, 9th and 10th.

Here's a couple of shots from recent travels for subject matter.  The photo will be part of a show this October with my son Peter called "Horizons".
He's a very talented artist, but doesn't claim to be.  I wish I had his skills.
I haven't done a lot of photos, so it will be different look to include a few.  The painting was inspired by a hunting trip with our other son Jack....but it's a long story.  You'll have to come to our show's opening on October 3rd at the Wild Hare Bistro in Bemidji.
Hope to see you there.

I traveled up to LOW - (Baudette, Minnesota for you non- Gopher folks)  for a great weekend workshop with some super local painters.   Coordinator Jane Sindelir (front row far right) and some truly eager individual artists, who were kind enough to listen to me for several days.   Friday night was all about Self-publishing and then Saturday and Sunday was spent working in acrylic paints.   Here are some their work which were outstanding.  Just over my right shoulder is Mary Arnesen, whose Grandfather was born in my home town of Mantorville, Mn. back in 1874!   Unbelievable connection at the top of the State.   I've never met anyone who was actually born in Mantorville.   Thanks LOW!
Hope to see a few "book Lovers" next week in Bemidji.  I'll be at Bookworld from 1-3pm and then American Legion 5-6:30pm both events on Friday the 20th.   OR  Join me the next day at The Wirt Summer Fest 2014 in Wirt, Minnesota.   Hey, it's just East of Dora Lake!

Thursday, June 5, 2014

Hey!  Lookie here...the third book arrived ahead of its release date by almost 3 weeks.   I've already placed copies in several stores in the Blackduck and Bemidji area as well as down in my home town of Mantorville, Mn.  I'm extremely pleased with how it turned out and thankful for all those that helped to make it possible.   Arrow Printing Inc. of Bemidji did my printing and really did a super job.   Thanks to Steve Krueger and Connie Knutson and the rest of the staff for their professional job.
Up coming events where I'll have the books and my art work include:   Book signings at BookWorld in Bemidji 1-3pm on June 20th and that same day from 5-6:30pm at the  Author Festival signing at the American Legion...Friday.
On Saturday the 21st, a new venue for me at the Wirt Summer Fest out East just past Dora Lake.   The last event of June will be Stagecoach Days down in my home town of Mantorville.  That will take place the 27th, 28th and 29th of June.   Hope to see you down the road.

After spending several days hunkered down in the studio because of spring snow and cold, I came out with what I think is a "pretty good" piece of art work.  Not sure of the title yet and would welcome some ideas.  The inspiration came from a pheasant hunt with son Jack.  I came upon this field stone pile of rocks and snapped a couple of images with my phone camera.  Amazing how good they are.  Hope you like it!

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

As stated earlier, the book is to bed and now I wait very impatiently for the object to be in my hands.  Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon I met with two artists to discuss our work and ways in which we might assist each other.   I thought it was a very good meeting and we'll have to see how it develops.
Next up is new show at Brigid's Pub -  the theme is "Green"??  not sure where or who came up with that one, but here's what  I chose to present.   It's called "Frog Symphony".   Hope you like it. The show opens May 2nd with a Studio 10 Artists reception that afternoon from 4-6pm.  Come join us.

It's been a while, so here goes...images, the text, the body of work is at the printers and I continue to work out the glitches.   Again, more than I thought there'd be, but hopefully this week we'll get it done.
Here's a glimpse at what the cover might look like for "Christmas Comes to Harvey and His Friends".

Thursday, February 6, 2014

It's T minus one day and I head down to the Cannon River Winery - Cannon Falls, Mn. for their annual Author's Book Signing event.  I will be there with my books and a sneak peak at what's to come in the next book.   They are located in downtown Cannon Falls at their great digs, which is a converted old car dealership/garage.   In the summer they can open up the big garage doors and welcome in the fresh air along with their wonderful wines.  Most likely the doors will be closed making it a bit warmer Saturday.  The hours are from 12 - 5pm.    The Winery plans to have two live music gigs that day along with the 12 authors.  I'm looking forward to connecting with new people and meeting up with my old friends.  If you are in the area...please stop by.  D. With a little encouragement from my friends in Southern Minnesota (the other God's Country)  I'm heading down to a great event at the Cannon River Winery in Cannon Falls, Minnesota.  While I'm not exactly a local author, I did hook up with their staff last year at the same event during a rousing 45th class re-union planning meeting.  They seem to like my children books and playing the part of a former Southern Minnie boy...well, I got invited this year.   Hope to see you there.   Here's their invite: We would like to promote Local Authors in Minnesota! Therefore, we've invited local authors to spend Saturday, February 8, 2014 from 12 to 5 pm at our Winery autographing and selling their books.
Like wine? Like books? Then this event is the perfect fit for you! Combined with award-winning wine and great local books, our warm and friendly atmosphere is a fantastic way to spend a cold winter day.
This event is free and open to the public.

I'm now back to work after the Holidays and it finds me working on my 3rd and final children's story book about the six animals.  Here's a preview of one recently finished drawings for the book "Christmas Comes to Harvey and His Friends".   I hope to have it out early fall this 2014.  I better, because that is what I've told everyone!   This Friday..January 3rd,  my art group Studio 10 has a "Winter" show opening at Brigid's Pub...please join us from 4:30-6pm.  for some "art talk", a few snacks and see the pieces.
